We are a confessionally reformed and evangelical congregation. We strive to be continually reformed by the Word of God found in the Bible. We adhere to the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Apostles Creed, and the Nicene Creed because they most accurately summarise Biblical truths on the topics they cover.
New Restalrig Parish church has its historical roots in the growth of Victorian Edinburgh in the 1880’s. It was originally a congregation of the Free Church of Scotland planted during a time of rapid building and growth on the east of the city. In 1888 a mission station was established by the Edinburgh Presbytery to serve the area with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Four years later the church ‘Restalrig Free Church’ was opened on the evening of the 4th February 1892. The preacher was the Rev Alexander Whyte, the minister of Free St George’s. His text was ‘Behold I make all things new’ (Revelation 21;5).
In 1900 Restalrig Free joined the United Free Church as a consequence of the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church. In 1929 upon the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland uniting, Restalrig United Free Church then became Restalrig New later to be named New Restalrig.
At present New Restalrig is a congregation of the Church of Scotland.
We have two Sunday worship service: 11.00 AM and 6.30 PM. Central to our worship is the free grace offered to sinner in Jesus Christ. To this end, we listen and respond to God’s word, sing, pray, and confess our faith as a body of believers.
David Court was brought up in Lesmahagow in south Lanarkshire. He came to a living faith in Christ in his early twenties and subsequently sensed a call to full time pastoral ministry. After studying geography at Strathclyde University and a short stint working with an insurance broker he went on to complete a BD at the University of Glasgow.
Upon ordination in 1989 David became the minister of Balshagray Parish Church in Glasgow. Soon after the church united with one of its neighbouring congregations to become Balshagray Victoria Park. David served there until June 2000, when he moved to New Restalrig Parish Church in Edinburgh.
David has been involved with a variety of different Christian organisations over the years, including Rutherford House, UCCF and the Bible Society.
David is married to Alison and they are the proud parents of Samuel, Jonathan, and Ruth. Due to a leg injury he has retired his football boots, but still supports Motherwell FC. A keen golfer, David can regularly be seen hacking it up at Duddingston Golf Club in Edinburgh.
