Everybody has a worldview. A worldview is a system of values and beliefs that helps us understand the world around us. Everyone has a series of beliefs that help them make judgments about the events in our world and in our lives. Most people, including most Christians, have never thought through their worldview, and therefore their worldview has many contradictions. You have a worldview even if you aren’t aware of it. Every worldview answers 4 questions about fundamental areas of life:
Origins–Where did we come from?
Meaning–Why are we here?
Morality–Why do we do what we do?
Destiny–Where are we going?
Every worldview, whether it is an orgainsed religion or philosophy or whether it is something you have cooked up yourself provides answers to these fundamental questions. But worldviews are not all created equal. In fact, there are two basic test questions for any worldview: 1) Is it intellectually credible, and 2) is it experientially satisfying? The first question tells us whether or not the worldview is true; the second questions tells us whether or not it is possible to live your life according to this worldview.
It is the tendancy of most people today to not worry about the first question at all, and to only be bothered with whether or not it works. This tendancy, however, is incredibly dangerous. If we do not attempt to determine whether or not our worldview is actually true we can be living our lives on the basis of a worldview that is filled with errors and internal contradictions. If there is an objective spiritual universe (and we’re only asking ‘if’ at this point) that is as equally real as the physical universe in which we live, we must make sure that our worldview can stand up under both of these criteria.
It is our contention that Christianity is the only worldview that can bear the scrutiny of these two test questions. It is undeniable that Christianity is experientially satisfying–millions of people have had their lives transformed by the message of the Bible in the last 2000 years. But have you taken the time to investigate whether or not Christianity is intellectually credible? There are many resources available to help you do this, but the best way is to visit a local church. We would be happy to have you visit us at New Restalrig any Sunday (directions).
